Right, so let's start at the start...
A domain is technically an area or a region. So, when it comes to the internet, there are a few areas, the most commonly known are '.co.uk' and '.com'.
We have different domains to make it easier to understand where things are and what they do, by filtering them - all the.co.uk's over there, all the .com's over here etc, but that isn't enough to be specific to any individual web site. So, we need to add in another filter - the domain name.
So, if '.co.uk' is a domain, then what is a domain name?
.co.uk takes us to a certain area, but with still over a million different web sites to choose from, so where to next? We need to filter down to choices again, so we need to add in something more specific, like in our instance 'n-code'.
The name 'n-code', coupled with the domain '.co.uk' specifies quite clearly a specific region to visit - the area of 'n-code', within the area of '.co.uk' - make sense?
Now, we need to mix in some more detail to the principle - DNS. Everything in the computer world works with numbers, to finitely identify [and more importantly, locate] each piece of equipment / information / web site from another - so any domain name needs to be converted into a number, known as an IP address.
This is where the domain name system [DNS] comes into town. This is just basically a gigantic list of all the domain names, with a corresponding number / IP address.
In theory, when you enter a domain name into the address bar on your computer, your internet browser asks the domain name system where to go, as it needs an IP address. The DNS takes in the browser's request, looks up the domain name, and gives the browser back the corresponding IP address - now the browser knows where to go.
But because there are so many web sites out there, the journey isn't quite that simple.
Your web site has an IP address on your web server, which in turn has an IP address on the web server's network, which in turn has an IP address on the domain name system [there can be many levels of IP addresses on systems, depending on each web server]. So when the DNS gives your browser an IP address, it actually goes to the first one, and get bounced on to the next, and on to the next, and the next, until it finally reaches your web site - this can mean that your browser actually visits different servers / systems all around the world before getting back to you!
This is an important point, please read the detail behind web hosting to find out why...
When choosing a domain name there are two main considerations to bear in mind - search engines and customers, but not necessarily in that order.
From a customer's point of view, the thought of inputting a really long name, such as frankfurlongsfurniturefranchise.com is a little intimidating, but on the flip side this name does spell out exactly what the web site is about to a search engine. Likewise, a short domain name like bbc.co.uk, is great to remember, and type in, from a customers point of view - but doesn't mean anything to a search engine. You have to find a middle ground, and as this name is how each and every customer will get their first impression of your site, it has to be a considered decision.
